Rivalries are one of the most important factors in the sports world. All sports teams in the world are made for one thing, and that is to compete. Spain is a country known for many things, whether it’s bullfighting or food. Spain is a nation with many exciting aspects. But when sports fans think of Spain they see football. Throughout the decades Spain has been one of the leading countries in the game of football having won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 and just recently the 2024 UEFA Euros. But when football fans talk about Spanish football it is usually focused on two clubs, with different ideals and backgrounds, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF. These two football clubs represent their nation and people at the peak of football competitions, they are both elite teams and ranked high among other top clubs worldwide.

F.C Barcelona

Originating from the Spanish region of Barcelona, the Catalonian club was founded on 29 November 1899 by a Swiss man who wanted to introduce football to the area. By 1909, FC Barcelona had grown and built its first stadium, which had a capacity of 6,000 people. FC Barcelona was one of the building pillars of the football world during the sport’s rise in the 1900s.

One of the major reasons for the club’s fame is the players, Johan Cyruff, Diego Maradona and perhaps the greatest football player of all time Lionel Messi. All of these legends played for Barcelona at one stage in their football careers, growing alongside both their club and other teammates. And in 1957 the famous Camp Nou was built which still stands as FC Barcelona’s home stadium today. Throughout the different football eras, Barcelona has always played by one single line “More than a club”. Today the club is at the top of LaLiga and brimming with young talent.

The first-ever recorded El Clásico happened on the 13th of May 1902 during the Copa de la Coronación where FC Barcelona won 3-1 versus Real Madrid CF. Ever since then, the two clubs have had each other at their throats competing against one another every time they met in a match. Over the century-long rivalry, Barca and Madrid have played each other 258 times. Barcelona won 101, Real Madrid won 106 and there were 51 draws from this we can conclude that the rivalry has not been one-sided at all with both teams winning around the same number of times.

The 26th of October 2024 was the last time these two Spanish giants faced off against each other at the time of this article. The hype built up before this game was huge the fanbases on both sides were equally as large and competitive as the other. After a huge win against Bayern Munich the all-time leading German champions in the UCL 3-1, Barcelona were feeling ready to clash against their biggest rivals. Real Madrid also signed the star player from France Kylian Mbappe. But in the end, Barcelona blew them out of the water winning 4-0. One of the key reasons for this was the strategy Barcelona have been using lately under their new manager Hansi Flick, an offside trap.
