Kendrick Lamar has done it again. The Compton, California, rapper’s latest album, GNX, came out of nowhere on November 22, 2024, and the internet is still trying to catch its breath. This isn’t just another album; it’s a new direction, and a reminder that Kendrick remains one of today’s most relevant artists.
In true Kendrick fashion, GNX arrived without warning. At 11:30 AM EST, a trailer for the album appeared on his YouTube channel. Half an hour later, the full album dropped on streaming platforms, sending fans into a fever. This marks Kendrick’s first album outside of TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment), released under his pgLang label.
The surprise factor wasn’t just a marketing move. It has set the tone for what this album means: free and doing things his own way.
From the opening track, “wacced out murals,” Kendrick plunges deep into self-reflection and reinvention. The album grapples with identity and legacy, and his struggles to break free of expectations. But then, there are parts with the playful energy of “peekaboo” featuring AzChike.
“heart pt. 6” is already a fan favourite, in its raw honesty regarding the public feud with Drake and reflecting on his growth. Meanwhile, “dodger blue”-featuring Roddy Ricch, Ink, and Sam Dew- is a love letter to his LA roots, folding nostalgia into modern West Coast vibes.

Collaborations shine throughout, from emotional and powerful moments like “luther” and “gloria,” both featuring SZA, to richly layered songs full of meaning. It’s a testament to his ability to draw out the best in his collaborators.
One of the highly discussed elements of GNX is Kendrick’s exit from Top Dawg Entertainment. For the first time, this is a fully independent release; it’s the feeling of a new chapter. On pgLang, Kendrick sounds freer than ever, playing with new sounds and ideas while remaining true.
This is independence felt in every track. Kendrick isn’t playing by anyone else’s rules, and the result is an album that feels deeply personal and, unapologetic.
Already, fans and critics alike are labelling GNX a game-changer. Social media has been flooded with everything from dissecting lyrics to sharing favourite moments. Songs like “reincarnated” and what fans named “stargazing” which is now “squabble up” have been declared instant classics.
With GNX, Kendrick has shown he is not afraid to grow. One thing is certain: Kendrick is not just making music but is leaving behind a legacy.
