The best use of sports statistics I have seen in the past year is from a YouTuber named JxmyHighroller, a former athlete turned content creator with a large following of over two million subscribers. The videos he creates utilise niche statistics that are not commonly brought up when describing players or teams. He combines these stats with current events in the basketball world to produce videos that are both entertaining and informative to basketball fans at all levels.

In a recent video of his titled, “The Thunder Are Embarrassing The NBA”, he speaks about the Oklahoma City Thunder and how their dominance in the current season is historic. An example of stats he used included the average points the Thunder have won against opponents in the first 17 games, which is not only the highest this season, but the highest recorded in the history of the NBA.

“I Used Data To Find The Closest Player To Stephen Curry In The Entire NBA,” another analysis video by JxmyHighroller, contains one of the most data-intensive subjects ever featured on his channel. He selected ten categories to rate NBA players compared to Curry. These categories include passing, gravity, shooting ability and portability. To calculate these advanced metrics, he uses complicated formulas. For example, to find a player’s passer rating, factors such as “Standardised Ast to Load Ratio”, which measures a player’s playmaking efficiency relative to their total offensive workload, are utilised.

JxmyHighroller’s videos offer entertainment about the NBA and basketball in a fun and engaging way, utilising complex statistics that are not only informative but also attention-grabbing, making them accessible to any basketball fan or anyone looking to become a fan!
