Why Barça Fans Loved a Loanee and Resented a Starter

Ferran Torres officially left Barcelona for PSG on the 15th of August 2026. After his spectacular world cup winning goal the Spaniard decided to join the current Champions League winners to mixed feelings from Barcelona fans and fans of football around the world. 

On the contrary, The man that was once compared to young Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford from Manchester United returned to his boyhood club in late June of 2026 and received nothing short of an emotional farewell from Barcelona fans. 

Despite their similar values as attackers for Barcelona one was the scapegoat when everything went wrong while the other was given a glorious goodbye. This illustrates the view that fans don’t judge players, they judge expectations. 

As a Barcelona fan I couldn’t help but wonder why these players who both provided their best to the club received such different send-offs after their departure. The difference comes down to expectations. Ferran was constantly judged against the potential he showed when he first arrived, while Rashford was already a proven star with a strong emotional connection to football fans.

Ferran’s mistakes became part of his reputation, while Rashford’s best moments shaped his. This shows that football fans often remember players not only for what they achieve, but for how those achievements compare to what was expected of them.

As a fan, it makes me question whether we judge players fairly, or whether we simply judge them based on the story we created around them.
